Government ramps up electricity power generation and distribution to meet domestic and industrial needs

The government has revived the Muhoroni power station that will inject 60 Megawatts to the National Grid to improve on capacity and reliability, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has said. 

Mr. Wandayi said, in an effort to provide uninterrupted power supply in lake region, the government has constructed and completed the Awendo-Madaba electricity power line and is awaiting power connection. 

The Cabinet Secretary said that, in an effort to stem power black outs, the government plans to establish a new power substation at Thurdibuoro in Nyakach in Kisumu County, start the construction of the Sondu-Ndhiwa electricity transmission line and upgrade the Gogo hydro-power station in Migori from 2 megawatts to 8 Megawatts . 

Mr wandayi said, the government will phase out production of thermal power generation in the next 6 years and fully adopt 100% clean renewable energy as a positive move to respond to climate change.

For the country to achieve the objective, Mr. Wandayi said, the government was diversifying energy generation sources ranging from hydroelectric, geothermal, wind and solar power in line with the objective of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that require global nations to gradually move away from what is described as red energy to green energy.
 
The Cabinet Secretary who spoke in Sondu Miriu in Kisumu County after  inspection of the Sondu Miriu hydro- electric power station, said, the government is modernizing electric power infrastructure, generation and transmission for adequate supply of clean, reliable, sustainable and affordable electricity.

The CS said, the intensive drive for development of power generation and distribution was aimed at meeting power needs for the domestic and industrial use to spur small and medium enterprises that will create employment opportunities.
