This department is in charge of power generation projects and plans.  The Directorate facilitates and provides support for the development of power generation projects in order to increase the installed power generation capacity. This is done through resource mobilization, monitoring and evaluation of the power generation projects and playing oversight role over the implementing agencies.
The system peak power demand as of 31st October 2022 was 2128 MW. The power generation capacity in the country was 3121 MW as at 31st October 2022 made up of the following main categories:



 

The department oversees the expansion and development of the national grid. It facilitates and provides support for the construction of power transmission lines, transmission substations, distribution substations, distribution lines and installation of distribution transformers in order to expand the national grid. This is done through resource mobilization, monitoring and evaluation of the power transmission line projects and oversight role over the implementing agencies.

The transmission and distribution network in the country as of 30th June, 2022 was as shown on the table below:

 

As of 30th June 2022, we had 5,455 transmission substations, 4,669 distribution substations and 9,170  11/0.415kV and 33/0.415kV distribution transformers.
