Mr. Alex Wachira is the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Energy. He brings a wealth of experience from the private sector, having worked as an investment banker in various capacities.
Prior to the appointment to the government, Mr. Wachira worked with Faida Investment Bank, one of Kenya's leading investment banks, which boasts an extensive retail franchise and distribution network nationally with footprints in Rwanda.
During his tenure at the bank, he traded and structured Treasury and corporate bonds at the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE). He also held positions at Dyer & Blair Investment Bank and Genghis Capital Limited. Mr. Wachira began his career in the financial sector after participating in the issuance of the Safaricom IPO in 2008, where he interned.
He is a founding member of the Bonds Market Association and a member of the Steering Committee for the Kenya Association of Stock Brokers and Investment Bankers (KASIB).
His contributions to the bonds market resulted in his appointment to the Central Depository Project at the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), which, in 2021, handled government securities worth Ksh 900 billion—marking the highest turnover ever recorded in Kenya.
A strong advocate for servant leadership through community engagement and empowerment, Mr. Wachira has spearheaded various initiatives, including free medical camps for cancer screening, tree planting to mitigate climate change, youth mentorship programs, and sports tournaments, among others.
He holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree from the University of Nairobi, where he began his distinguished leadership journey, serving as the Secretary General of the Nairobi University Nursing Students Association (NUNSA) and as Treasurer for the Confederation of Medical Students Associations.
Mr. Wachira is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Leadership at Pan African Christian University.
