Petroleum operations in Kenya are governed by the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Act, Chapter 308 of the Laws of Kenya which was revised for the first time in 1986 the latest revision was completed in 2015.
Exploration for oil and gas in Kenya dates back to early 1950s. Major oil companies that were involved in the early exploration included BP/SHELL, AMOCO, TOTAL, PETROCANADA, CHEVRON and TEXAS PACIFIC among others.
